Condition: Vitreal Syneresis
Organ System: Urogenital

Vitreous Degeneration, also called Peripheral Vitreous Degeneration (PVD), is a problem that affects the eyes. It is brought about by the failure of the vitreous to function properly thereby permitting the retina to shift out of position when the dog suddenly shifts his head. Serious vision problems including blindness can be possible consequences. This is a relatively common ophthalmic problem in dogs that may occur as a primary condition due to progressive retinal atrophy or as a secondary sequel to lens luxation, uveitis, or hypermature cataracts. The problem can increase the likelihood of retinal degeneration and detachment of the retina. Treatment involves laser surgery to stabilize the retina and prevent it from getting detached while also making it possible for vitreous regeneration.
