Vitamin B12-Responsive Malabsorption in dogs

Also known as “selective intestinal cobalamin malabsorption”. It is a problem affecting young Giant Schnauzers, characterized by the selective inability of the bowel to absorb vitamin B12. Affected puppies suffer from chronic non-regenerative anemia, low white blood cell count, low serum vitamin B12. There may also be metabolite in the urine, and puppies usually fail to thrive. The treatment regimen involves dietary therapy, treatment of the primary cause, and management of complications.
