Species: Dog
Condition: Ulcerative Keratitis
Organ System: Urogenital

An eye inflammation affecting cornea and causing the formation of ulcers on its surface. Ulcers are painful, causing the eyes to be overly sensitive to light and to tear excessively. The eye is red and sometimes closed. The dog is trying to rub it with its paws. Breeds with prominent, large eyes and short muzzles are more likely to develop this condition due to various injuries, infections or other eye diseases. The vet will thoroughly examine the eye, using diagnostic dyes. Depending on severity of the symptoms, treatment consists of locally applied antibiotics and painkillers and in serious cases, surgical procedure to remove the ulcer.
