Species: Dog
Condition: Tracheal Collapse
Organ System: Urogenital

Tracheal collapse is caused when the cartilage which forms your dog’s windpipe (trachea) loses its rigidity and therefore becomes prone to collapse when your dog breathes. The characteristic symptom of this condition is a honking cough. Tracheal collapse mainly affects older dogs of small breeds, in particular: Yorkshire terrier, Pomeranian, toy Poodle and Skye terrier. Your vet can prescribe medication to control the condition and will also examine your dog’s heart as tracheal collapse is often seen in dogs with heart disease. They will also give advice on managing your dog, for example by walking them on a harness rather than a lead.
