Species: Dog
Condition: Third Eyelid Abnormalities
Organ System: Urogenital

The third eyelid is a protective covering over the inner corners of your dog’s eyes. It contains cartilage (to provide support) and a tear gland. “Cherry eye” occurs when the connection between the tear gland and the cartilage becomes impaired resulting in the tear gland extending up into the eyeball where it is vulnerable to becoming swollen and inflamed and often leads to irritation of the conjunctiva and cornea and “dry eye”. You will be able to see if your dog has cherry eye by the colour of the eye. This disorder tends to affect younger dogs and your vet will correct it through surgery.
