Also referred to as kidney amyloidosis, it is a disorder of protein metabolism characterized by the abnormal deposition of amyloid (a protein) in the kidneys. The cause remains poorly understood. It is a genetic problem in certain breeds of dogs, such as the shar-pei, and as a sequel to chronic and inflammatory conditions. The average age of diagnosed cases is 9 years old. The disease can affect any age or breed with Beagles, walker hounds, and collies at higher risk. Deposition of amyloid in the kidneys leads to excessive protein loss in the urine and eventually kidney failure. Treatment regimen includes managing any concurrent kidney failure, treating underlying problems, and supportive treatment.
