Also referred to as impetigo, it is a bacterial infection of the skin. Main clinical features include the formation of papules or pustules on the skin. These are often red and raised, and filled with pus in the center. There may also be flaky skin patches, circular crusts, patchy hair loss, and itching. The condition is often secondary to allergic dermatitis and also develops when the skin surface is broken. Puppies are prone to “puppy pyoderma†in the groin and underarms. Typical treatment involves antibiotic therapy. Most cases resolve with topical and/or oral antibiotic therapy and overall prognosis is good to excellent.
