    Species: Dog
    Condition: Progressive Retinal Atrophy
    Organ System: Nervous/sensory

The retina is the light-sensitive area of the eye at the back of the eyeball. In progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) the cells which allow the retina to function begin to degenerate. The earliest indication of PRA is generally loss of night vision so you may notice your dog having difficulties seeing in dim light. This is followed by loss of peripheral vision and then blindness. There is no cure for this condition however dogs generally adapt well to vision impairment and may still enjoy a good quality of life. Your vet will give advice on managing your dog and their environment appropriately.
