Species: Dog
Condition: Pigmentary Keratitis
Organ System: Nervous/sensory

Chronic keratitis is a long lasting inflammation of the cornea; a transparent surface of the eye. It is usually a result of the constant irritation, often associated with disorders of the eyelash growth. Large eyed breeds with short muzzles are predisposed to this condition as they are more prone to eye problems and injuries. Long lasting inflammatory process often causes deposition of the brown pigment on the outer surface of the eye complicated with infections. It can lead to progressive vision impairment and blindness. The vet will proscribe antibiotic and anti-inflammatory treatment, but in some cases surgery is required.
