Species: Dog
Condition: Pelger Huet Anomaly
Organ System: Nervous/sensory

An inherited blood disorder affecting the development of the neutrophils, a type of white blood cells. It is in most cases harmless condition affecting many dog breeds. In rare cases Pelger-Huet anomaly can cause death in utero and such puppies are stillborn. But in the majority of cases, this disorder is discovered by accident, during the routine examination of the blood smears from the affected dog.
Neutrophils look slightly different than is expected. But otherwise, there are no symptoms or any kind of impact to the general health of the animal. It is therefore not necessary to treat the condition.
