Species: Dog
Condition: Oligodendroglioma
Organ System: Nervous/sensory

A common, often malignant brain tumour developing from specialized brain cells. Brachiocephalic breeds are genetically predisposed to this tumour. It grows aggressively, destroying surrounding tissues, and metastasises. Affected dogs experience rapid onset of neurological symptoms: incoordination, seizures and behavioural changes. Diagnosis requires specialized imaging including CT and MRI scans along with cytologic analysis of biopsied material. Treatment includes management of the symptoms and focuses on attempts to destroy the tumour mass with radiation and chemotherapy. In some cases surgery is an option as well.
