Species: Dog
Condition: Non-union of fractures of the distal third of the radius & ulna
Organ System: Musculoskeletal

Delayed or non-union of fractures of the distal third of the radius and ulna is a condition wherein the healing of fracture is taking longer than expected (delayed healing) or the bone fragments have not healed at the first attempted treatment (non-union). Miniature and toy breeds, including Pomeranians are predisposed. Factors include reduced blood supply to the distal radius in toy breeds, the absence of soft tissues enveloping the fracture site in toy breeds, and the “exuberant” nature of toy dog breeds resulting in their wanting to use the limb soon after surgery or before external stabilisation of the fracture. Affected animals suffer from severe pain and require further surgical interventions. Amputation of the leg may be necessary in some cases.
