Species: Dog
Condition: Melanoma
Organ System: Integument

This is the most common tumor found in the oral cavity of dogs, and the second most common tumor in the toes. Male dogs and certain canine breeds are predisposed to the problem, including Chow Chows, Cocker Spaniels, Golden retrievers, Scottish terriers, and Gordon Setters. These tumors are locally invasive and often penetrate deep into the bone, with a high rate of spreading to other tissues. The cause has not been fully established among dogs and cats. Aggressive surgery to remove the melanoma is often undertaken. A new melanoma vaccine has also been used for treatment. There is poor prognosis for dogs that does not receive proper treatment.
