Kidney Aplasia, Unilateral in dogs

Species: Dog
Condition: Kidney Aplasia, Unilateral
Organ System: Urogenital

Also called renal agenesis, this is a hereditary defect characterized by the absence of one or both kidneys. This is a rare condition in dogs and is almost always accompanied by absence of the ureter, and sometimes hypoplasia of the urinary bladder. Dogs where both kidneys are absent rarely live beyond 4-6 weeks old. However, those with only one kidney may not show distinct signs, and the condition may just be an incidental finding when examining a dog for incontinence or suspected ectopic ureters. Dogs with only one kidney may manifest urinary incontinence, polydipsia, polyuria, and dehydration.
