Species: Dog
Condition: Hip Dysplasia
Organ System: Nervous/sensory

Hip dysplasia is a disorder in which there is a bad fit between the leg bone (femur) and the pelvis. This can lead to the bone slipping out of the socket and if this happens repeatedly, it can lead to damage to the joint, such as osteoarthritis. Hip issues are most common in older dogs of larger breeds (particularly labradors), especially if they are overfed and gain weight quickly as puppies. Although hip dysplasia can not be cured, it can often be controlled by a combination of medication and lifestyle management, in particular weight control. If this is unsuccessful, your vet may suggest hip-replacement surgery.
