    Species: Dog
    Condition: Exposure Keratopathy Syndrome
    Organ System: Nervous/sensory

Chronic irritation of the corneal surface of the eye as a sequel of increased evaporation of tears and consequent corneal exposure. Predisposing factors include protrusion of the eyeball (exopthalmos), inability to completely close the eyelids (lagopthalmus), and an exceptionally large eyelid opening (macroblepharon). The latter is often associated with entropion of the lower eyelid. These abnormal anatomical features can result in poor blinking reflex thereby reducing the protective mechanism of the eye. Dogs suffering from this inherited syndrome often suffer from persistent discomfort and have higher risks of developing corneal ulceration. Typical symptoms are associated with chronic irritation of the cornea and include redness of the eye, increased tear production, and pawing or rubbing of the affected eye. Chronic cases often lead to corneal pigmentation and eventually vision problems.
