Species: Dog
Condition: Epidermal Hyperkeratosis
Organ System: Nervous/sensory

Hyperkeratosis involves the thickening of the outer layer of the skin where keratin, a tough protective protein, is present. The skin thickening is often the body’s response to constant rubbing, pressure and other types of local irritation. In dogs, hyperkeratosis is often formed on the footpads and nose. There are also pathological causes of hyperkeratosis and includes fungal infections, hypersensitivity reactions, Ichthyosis, Canine Distemper, Otitis externa, deficiency of vitamin A and/or vitamin Z, and a variety of other conditions affecting the layers of the skin. Your veterinarian can formulate a line of treatment depending on the specific cause of the hyperkeratosis.
