Species: Dog
Condition: Cystinuria
Organ System: Nervous/sensory

A genetic anomaly where kidneys are not metabolizing amino acid cystine. It is therefore concentrated in the urine and it clumps into stones that are blocking the urinary tract. Dogs are in pain and straining while urinating, passing small amounts of urine, sometimes with traces of blood. Urine flow blockage is a serious condition requiring immediate veterinary attention. The vet will try to eliminate the blockage and empty the bladder. Your dog might have the urinary catheter for a few additional days. There is always a possibility of recidives and it is therefore necessary to adjust the dog’s nutrition in order to avoid them.
