Species: Dog
Condition: Colour Dilution Alopecia
Organ System: Musculoskeletal

Colour dilution alopecia is a disorder connected with the breeding of dogs for a specific coat colour, which is achieved by diluting other, stronger, coat colours. It is often seen in dogs which are fawn or blue as they are dilutions of red/brown and black/tan respectively. Dogs with light coats tend to show symptoms from about 6 months, but in darker dogs it may take 2 or 3 years. Your dog will experience hair loss and dry skin. There is no cure but the condition can be managed with moisturizing shampoos. Your vet will advise on taking care of your dog, in particular making sure that they are protected from the sun and from cold.
