Species: Dog
Condition: Canine Uveodermatological Syndrome
Organ System: Integument

This is a rare disease condition where the dog’s immune system forms antibodies that act against its own pigment cells in the skin and the light-sensing cells located in the back of the eye. Clinical signs include premature whitening of the hair, painful red eyes, and skin pigmentation that is prevalent on the dog’s face and footpads. The treatment regimen is focused primarily on the eye problems, since those in the skin and hair are just cosmetic issues. Without proper treatment, an affected dog may become permanently blind. The Canine Uveodermatological Syndrome is the canine counterpart to a condition in humans known as Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome.
