Canine Multiple System Degeneration in dogs

Species: Dog
Condition: Canine Multiple System Degeneration
Organ System: Nervous/sensory

It is a hereditary disorder affecting Kerry Blue Terriers and Chinese Crested Dogs, characterized by head-shaking when a puppy tries to focus on something, and later on progress to exaggerated, goose-stepping movements. Affected puppies are born normal and only start to develop signs of the condition at about four months of age. When dogs are about 12-18 months of age, the condition will develop into a more severe disorder. Affected dogs suffer from mobility difficulties and may fall frequently. These dogs become incapacitated by the time they are about two years old.
