Species: Dog
Condition: Canine Idiopathic Polyarthritis
Organ System: Musculoskeletal

The condition is characterized by inflammation of multiple movable joints especially in the shoulder, knee, hips, etc. It is often considered a non-erosive immune-mediated polyarthritis because the cartilage of the joint is not eroded. Idiopathic polyarthritis is the most common form of polyarthritis, for which no cause has been pinpointed. The problem is more common in dogs, ages 2-5 years old. Dogs suffering from the condition do not necessarily exhibit lameness or an unsteady gait. A thorough history of your dog’s health is very important in the diagnosis of the disease. The mode of treatment involves administration of steroids and antibiotics, with some dogs needing lifelong maintenance therapy.
