Species: Dog
Condition: Blastomycosis
Organ System: Cardiovascular

A systemic fungal infection which is caused by Blastomyces dertatitidis, the infection is prevalent in North America. Although relatively rare, the infection can be fatal. The fungal spores are inhaled by dogs from moist soil and vegetation. The initial infection starts from the lungs and quickly spread to the lymphatics, skin, eyes, and bones. Large sporting breeds of dogs that live close to bodies of water often have higher risks of developing the disease. If left untreated, the dog can die from the widespread infection. Dogs with compromised immune systems are more likely to succumb to the fungal infection. Treatment involves anti-fungal medication and is usually successful if the infection is detected during the early phase of the disease.
