Species: Dog
Condition: Basal Cell Tumour
Organ System: Cardiovascular

Often viewed as one of the most common skin cancers in dogs, these skin tumors arise from the basal epithelial cells that are precursors of the epidermis. The tumors appear to be firm, confined, and freely movable masses in the dermis and subcutis on the head and neck of the affected dog. Being benign, the tumors are slow growing and rarely metastasize. The basal cell carcinoma is the more invasive form but has low-grade malignancy. A higher number of cases have been diagnosed in middle age to older dogs especially among Cocker spaniels and poodles. Diagnosis involves your dog’s health history and a thorough physical examination conducted by your veterinarian. A biochemistry profile, CBC, electrolyte panel, and urinalysis may also be recommended.
