Species: Dog
Condition: Alpha-1 Antitrypsin-related Hepatitis
Organ System: Gastrointestinal

Also called AAT Related Chronic Hepatitis, AAT Related Chronic Cirrhosis, Alpha-1 Anti-protease Deficiency, Alpha-1 Protease Inhibitor Deficiency, AATD. Alpha-1 antitrypsin is a blood protein predominantly synthesized in the liver. It functions to protect tissues from specific blood cells that kill bacteria when the body mounts an immune response. In AATD, there is the absence or low levels of the blood protein AAT in the blood resulting in tissue damage and swelling. Another potential condition that can take place is inflammation and/or cirrhosis of the liver caused by the accumulation of abnormal protein in the cells of the liver.
