Species: Dog
Condition: Cutanous Haemangiosarcoma
Organ System: Integument
Cutaneous hemangiosarcoma is the skin form of hemangiosarcoma, a malignant tumor of the cells lining the blood vessels. The disease appears to be associated with ultraviolet light exposure and commonly affects dogs with minimal pigmentation and thin hair coats such as boxer, golden retriever, German shepherd, English springer spaniel, Airedale terrier, whippet, Dalmatian, beagle, pitbull terrier, basset hound, saluki and English pointer. The tumor appears as slightly raised, red to purple nodules under the skin (dermal or subcutaneous) and found on the abdomen, prepuce, and hindlimb. Treatment involves surgical excision of the masses, cryotherapy and laser ablation. Prognosis depends on stage of the tumor. Typically, new masses form and the tumor may spread to other organs.
