Species: Dog
Condition: Congenital Hereditary Cataract
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
This type of cataract is already present at birth, usually affecting both eyes. The condition is commonly seen in Miniature Schnauzers where a disruption of the normal structure of the lens fibers or its capsule leads to a loss of transparency and consequent reduction in vision. The lens of the eye of affected dogs appears to have a crushed-ice appearance. In canines, this form of cataract may occur as an independent disease entity or in association with other important ocular disease. A dog diagnosed with congenital hereditary cataract should never be used for breeding.
