Osteochondrodysplasia in dogs

A congenital anomaly in the development of the bone and cartilage. It is inherited as a recessive trait. Some breeds are selectively bred to be dwarfs, but in other cases the dwarf appearance is seen as a disorder. The dog has disproportional body; the limbs are shortened with abnormally long trunk. Their head can be enlarged, often with shortened upper jaw. Depending in the severity of the condition, affected dogs can experience a variety of health issues from almost no evident symptoms to severe joint pain and inflammation with respiratory and reproductive problems. There is no effective treatment, but some symptoms can be managed.
