Gluten-sensitive Enteropathy in dogs

Gluten-sensitive enteropathy is a disorder which is almost unique to the Irish Setter. It is similar to wheat allergies in humans although your dog is likely to have less severe symptoms. Typical symptoms of gluten allergy include loss of condition (failure to gain weight, or even weight loss) and severe diarrhoea. These symptoms generally become apparent at about 6 months. As in humans, this condition can not be cured but it can be effectively managed by avoiding gluten in your dog’s diet. Once your dog’s food has been adjusted, they are likely to return to normal within 1 or 2 months and can live a full life.
