Species: Dog
Condition: Familial Kidney Disease
Organ System: Nervous/sensory

Familial kidney disease is the collective name for a group of kidney disorders which occur across a range of breeds but which have a hereditary link (proven or suspected). If your dog has one of these disorders then they will show the general symptoms of kidney problems, in particular extreme thirst and frequent urination. While the specific age of onset and symptoms vary according to breed all of these conditions result, ultimately in kidney failure. There is currently no cure for any of them; however your vet will be able to advise on ways to slow progression so that your dog can enjoy a good quality of life for as long as possible.
