Species: Dog
Condition: Laryngeal Paralysis
Organ System: Nervous/sensory
Laryngeal paralysis is a condition in which loss of function in the muscles of the throat leads to the airway being obstructed. The most obvious symptom of this is difficulty breathing. In Dalmatians, laryngeal paralysis tends to occur as part of a more complex condition which is very difficult to treat. For other breeds, mild cases may be controlled by managing your dog’s lifestyle to avoid situations where the airways will be strained, for example strenuous exercise and over-excitement. In severe cases, your vet may recommend surgery. Dogs (except Dalmatians) are likely to enjoy a good quality of life but must not be used for breeding.
